Between Furniture & Infrastructure: Expanding Disciplinarity

Tom Holbrook

5th Studio was founded 16 years ago. With a heterogenous output, the practice sets out to act as generalists: to bring spatial intelligence to situations that range from the particularity of architectural intervention through to the very large scale of landscape and strategy.

Working in East Anglia, one of the densest accumulations of infrastructure anywhere, Holbrook's interest lies in the potential role of architecture in this infrastructural realm. The research explores the practice's work in 'as found' contested or 'contaminated' fields, synthesising the results of instrumental thinking, heritage & conservation controls, post-industrial scar-tissue and poor planning into strategies for the establishment of an incipient urbanity.
